I have a Baccalaureus Scientiae, or BS, from the University of Connecticut. GO HUSKIES!
I studied Animal Science with a focus in Equine studies. I also found my course load included enough credits in Human Development to qualify for a minor in people. Go figure.
I worked in the Veterinary field for many years, getting my official Certification as a Veterinary Technician early in the process. I never lost interest in helping both large and small animals get better, but had a very difficult time losing them over time. So, I moved on to work with children and adolescents in mental health facilities and school environments. Tough kids are great. The work is very rewarding one out of ten times. And that one can be enough to keep you going for many years. Nothing like it.
Except I found some of the systems were pretty sick that are trying to "help" kids. It was taking its toll on me and I decided that I wanted to be helping people who actually WANT to be helped! So, I decided, after becoming Reiki certified, to become a Licensed Massage Therapist. The palpation skills I developed as an Animal Science major and a Veterinary Technician came in handy. Animals can't tell you what hurts verbally, so I had to learn to feel where it was. And working with the "difficult" kids gave me the ability to sense subtle shifts in energy and communication styles, and be able to ebb and flow with a variety of clients and their specific needs. Sometimes what I'm being told verbally doesn't jive with what the body language is telling me. So basically, I cheat.
So, there it is. Basically.
